 "Night Visions"
 Epiphany: A Literary Journal
 Spring/Summer 2021
 Story | Journal

The desert tests the faith of even the most committed.
When I received orders to deploy here, I imagined sand
dunes and shimmering heat. But the Jordanian desert in
February is unforgiving, its sandstone packed hard and
cold. Strange rock formations pock the horizon, one
blending into the other. The Valley of the Moon, the
 Jordanians call it.

Picture the scene. Knees pressed to groins, forty,
fifty marines packed in the cabin of a C-130, en
route to Iraq by way of magnificent Ali Al Salem,
Kuwait. Cropped hair, clean shaves, desert camou-
flage. Lower lips packed with chew.

Major Riley was suspended from a pull-up bar, mid-leg
swing, when Gunnery Sergeant Mortimer called out for
him from down by the shitters, hustling toward the
tent gym with all the speed he could muster.
 "Major Riley, sir!"
Riley dropped to the ground and winced.

 "Lanier"
 Salamander Journal
 Forthcoming
 Story | Journal

Not until five years had passed did I see Lanier
again. His appearance had changed--civilianized, I
suppose, with a longish beard, a small fro, and a
little pooch around the midsection--yet still Lanier
all the same. I felt a pang of recognition, the
strength of which surprised me given the years during
which I had scarcely thought of him.
